In the summer of 2005, a group of volunteers from the Construction Career Days events in
Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, Rochester formed a New York State based Oversight Committee to
help with the organization of the many statewide career events. The Statewide
Committee was head by then Chairman, Garland Sweeney of the NYS Department of
Transportation.
Many of the Construction Career Day events have since received grants through the Federal
Highway Administration and have sent over 20,000 students through their gates.
Why are we doing this?
The Need for New Workers
- Our industry needs 240,000 craft professionals every year to keep up with all the
construction projects nationwide.
- Presently, the average age of workers in the skilled trades nationwide is 48.
- Those born during 1945-1950, the first wave of baby boomers, will start retiring in
2010-2015.
- Construction Workers pay in New York averaged $59,610, 1% more than all private
sector employees in the state.

“…Nearly half of what will be the built environment in 2030 doesn’t exist yet.”
